Back when The Deadhouse was first starting one of the very first albums that was reviewed here was by the awesome Shadow Windhawk And The Morticians for their debut EP, Casket Spray. If you don’t recall the review, let me sum it up by saying I called it the best horrorpunk album of 2014 released at that point. Here we are months later, and that statement still rings true. Now, the band is preparing for their first live show opening for former Misfits frontman Michale Graves in their home base of Salt Lake City, and they have seen fit to unleash a new tune that will be exclusive to an upcoming 7″ vinyl split with THEM!, a fellow horrorpunk band from Germany. The Deadhouse is happy to team up with Shadow Windhawk And The Morticians to help unveil the digital stream of their brand new track, The Never Dead! Read on for a quick review, plus some information from Shadow Windhawk himself on the track, plus the lyrics to the new tune!

Given that on the Casket Spray EP the band covered several different topics including A Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween and what I have called in my review the best song ever written and performed about Nightbreed, I was intrigued as to where the band would go for their next track. Drawing inspiration from Don Coscarelli‘s 1979 horror classic Phantasm immediately seemed like a great idea, and having heard the track, this song stands up with all of the great tracks on Casket Spray and would have fit right in there, while also showing growth from the band.

The track begins with a sample of Angus Scrimm from Phantasm II, leading into the pounding guitar riff that drives the song. Shadow Windhawk‘s unique vocals, which have consistently been one of the band’s calling cards sings of the Morningside Mortuary, the main home of The Tall Man in the films. The always awesome drum track from drummer Trip MD keeps the song going, while the bass riff from Rich Misery combines perfectly with Windhawk‘s guitar melody, giving us one hell of a wicked track. Once you add in the backing screams from Rich Misery you get a new aspect of the band which arguably takes it to a whole new level. As I mentioned earlier the song stays true to the band’s already established sound while adding new elements such as the screams that can take the band forward. The only downside I see to this track, is that is only one song, and it makes the newer wait for the next EP or album much more unbearable.

Now, let’s throw it over to Shadow Windhawk for his thoughts on the new song.

“The Never Dead” is a song that has been in the back of my mind for a long time, but the final version that we’ve released is a writing collaboration between Rich and I. Last year I had written lyrics for a song called “Sundown at Morningside”. The music for the song changed up a lot and is now unrecognizable from what it used to be; but I kept a bunch of the lyrics and refined them into this song. After Phantasm V: Ravager was announced a few months ago, we decided it was time to pull the Phantasm tribute out of the attic to celebrate the final chapter of the series. We also needed to decide on our contribution to the split 7″ we had agreed to participate in with the German horrorpunk band, Them! So I came up with a riff that we played with for awhile, then Rich came up with another riff that suited everything really well. I took my lyrics and developed the vocal melody and harmonies over the course of the rehearsals. Rich and I mashed our riffs together, arranging them and tweaking them as we went along; Trip threw in his always stellar drumming, complete with all his crazy fills and that ride cymbal that just sizzles through the track. We discussed taking the band in a heavier direction with the song, but at the same time keeping true to our horrorpunk / goth roots. Rich came up with some wicked screams to compliment and beef up my melodic vocals, something that I feel shows a certain diversity in our sound. I think that by marrying our two different skill sets as vocalists (Rich also is lead singer for a death metal project called Burn Your World) we have provided our music with a darker, deeper tone and more depth than your average horrorpunk band. I love hearing my clean vocals mixed with Rich’s harsh, foreboding screams. It just works. Before we recorded the tune, I revisited the old Phantasm films yet again to draw inspiration for what were to be the final lyrics and then we just blasted it out in one afternoon in the studio with Bruce Kirby, our sound engineer at Boho Digitalia in Salt Lake City. “The Never Dead” is our love letter to the Phantasm series and old school AFI, and we’re damn proud to put it out into the world finally. The song will be exclusively available for purchase on our upcoming 7″ vinyl split with Them! The release will be a collaborative effort between our label Black Flame Records and the label for Them! – Dancing Carcass Records. It should drop later this Summer. Every vinyl sold will come with a download code, so unless you buy the vinyl you won’t be able to own the song. However, you may stream the song at http://shadowwindhawkandthemorticians.com/. We send our love to our Morticians Assistants around the world…enjoy the new tune and hopefully next up we will get on a tour to come see all of you creatures of the night!

And now, as another special treat I am happy to present the lyrics to the new song, directly from the man who wrote them himself!

The Never Dead

Lyrics by Shadow Windhawk

sundown at Morningside
grandmother’s eyes are blind
yet she sees through space and time

dead veins run cold with formaldehyde
and in our séance
I feel their spirits writhe

of his construction
I am made
with silver eyes
dead souls obey
darkness returns from yesterday
and this portal
will guide my way
through eternity

sundown at Morningside
exhume the grave site
hack the corpses down to size

at dawn I hope to find
a way to ditch my curse
trapped inside this old black hearse

of his construction
I am made
with silver eyes
dead souls obey
darkness returns from yesterday
and this portal
will guide my way
through eternity

and from another world he’ll rise
the Tall Man has my soul
spheres of death
I’ve lost control

blood, smoke and candlelight
as I become the black flame
that dances in your eyes

we are the never dead
we are the never dead
we are the never dead
we are the never dead

we are the never dead
we are the never dead
