1) Hey, Bee
3) Monster Hop
4) Teen Wolf
5) In The Park
Well, it has certainly been a while since we looked at some doo-wop styled songs here on the site, and what should fall into my lap but a new EP from a band in the very province that I live in! Hailing from Bailey Downs (and yes, that is the fictional town that werewolf classic Ginger Snaps takes place in, so points for awesomeness and creativity already) The Lycotones is the brain child of Mikey Garou, and Monster Hop! is the band’s first official release. If you’ve read my reviews in the past of albums that could fall in the doo-wop style (especially those from friends of The Deadhouse The Mutant Members Only Club and The Bastards) you’ll know it’s very hit or miss for me personally, so how does Monster Hop! work out?
Starting with the short (just over a minute in length) intro track “Hey, Bee” it establishes the bands sound, but it is when we get into the second song, “Wicca” that you begin to realize the incredible amount of potential that The Lycotones has. Truthfully, it may be one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard in all of 2018, and is definitely worthy of hitting the repeat button more than once.
The title track follows, and while good on its own, it has the unfortunate fate of following the best song on the album, and (spoiler alert!) is also sandwiched on the other side by the second-best song on this all-too-short EP. “Teen Wolf” is another romp that is sure to catch your ear, and gives “Wicca” a run for its money in the catchiness department. “In The Park” closes the EP, and is a little slower with a bit of a love song vibe to it. Good on its own, but much like the title track, struggles due to following such a great song.
Monster Hop! is a debut with bite, and I wholeheartedly recommend grabbing a copy. 10 minutes of your day which will no doubt have a smile brought to your face at some point, you really can’t go wrong on this one. I’m looking forward to seeing what Garou and The Lycotones come up with next, and will be paying close attention for future music from the project!
You can grab your copy of Monster Hop! at the Official Lycotones Bandcamp page and make sure to give the band a Like on The Lycotones Facebook page to stay updated on all of the band’s latest goings-on.
